Fairtrade Fortnight 2021

Climate, Fairtrade and You

During Fairtrade Fortnight, 22nd February to 7th March, Brighter Better Orrell, in partnership with our local Co-Op, will be encouraging the community to learn about, and celebrate, the people who grow our food and drink.

The climate crisis is happening now, and for Fairtrade producers, this is one of their biggest challenges. Our choices are powerful and their effects can reach far beyond our area, shaping the world we want to grow up and live in. Daily decisions about what we eat, drink and wear affect the lives of people around the world. This is our opportunity, by making a few changes and being more aware of our purchases, to make a difference.

What is Fairtrade?

Small-scale farmers and producers in the developing world often bear the costs and risks of trade, while global companies make the profits. Fairtrade ensures the world's poorest growers and producers are able to earn a decent living for them to afford life's essentials, such as food, education and healthcare, along with safe working conditions, non-discrimination and support the  welfare of children.

It represents a solution to poverty and is based on a partnership, which means the interests of farmers and workers are just as important as the buyers, retailers and consumers, so they are able to earn a premium which they can put back into their communities.

The Co-Op have supported Fairtrade for over 25 years and are committed to changing lives through the products they sell, and fighting unfairness in the food chain. Support this cause by looking out for the Fairtrade symbol in our local store.
